Coding Round

Round 1 of 5DSA / Coding
60 min
ConcurrencyGraph SCCProduction Code Patterns

Hard DSA with production-quality code expectation. At Senior level Walmart doesn't want an algorithm sketch — they want code another engineer could merge and ship. Proactive concurrency, error handling, and memory bound discussion separate the pass from the fail. Graph SCC and concurrency primitives both appear at this level.

Hard

What to expect

  • e.g., 'Design a thread-safe rate limiter class supporting per-user, per-IP, and global rate policies simultaneously' — token bucket with ReentrantLock; follow-up: how does it behave when the system clock skews across nodes?
  • e.g., 'Find all strongly connected supplier clusters in a product dependency graph — a cluster means every supplier in it can reach every other' — Tarjan's SCC; follow-up: which cluster is the single point of failure for the most downstream products?
  • Must handle edge cases proactively (empty graph, self-loops, null inputs) without being prompted — waiting to be asked about edge cases signals SDE-2 thinking
  • Binary tree BFS and DFS problems are confirmed at Senior level too — don't assume it's all graph/concurrency; fundamentals are still tested

System Design 1

Round 2 of 5System Design
60 min
Distributed QueuingMulti-regionOptimistic ConcurrencySLA Design

Full HLD for a Walmart-scale retail system — typically inventory management or the order fulfillment pipeline. At Senior level you're expected to raise multi-region concerns, failure modes, and cost optimization without being prompted. The offline-first requirement for in-store systems trips up candidates who've only designed pure cloud services.

Hard

What to expect

  • e.g., 'Design Walmart's Black Friday order management system' — distributed queue for order intake, optimistic concurrency control on inventory reservation, saga pattern for rollback on payment failure; SLA: order placement under 500ms p99
  • Multi-region: 'Walmart operates data centers in US, India, and Canada — how do you handle inventory writes from a US store when the primary region is degraded? What does the customer see?'
  • Failure scenario: '50 fulfillment centers lose connectivity simultaneously during Cyber Monday — what is the customer experience and what is the operator experience?'
  • Designing without raising the offline-store POS reconciliation problem — or saying 'just use eventual consistency' without explaining the conflict resolution strategy — is a hard Senior-level failure

About Walmart Senior SDE Interviews

Walmart Senior SDE (IN4) interviews run 4–6 elimination rounds covering hard DSA, LLD with a retail platform focus, two system design rounds at the scale of Black Friday retail operations, and a leadership behavioral panel. Interviewers care about how you think more than how fast you code — clarity of reasoning under ambiguity is the differentiator at this level.
