Machine Coding Round

Round 1 of 4LLD / OOD
90 min
OOPSOLID PrinciplesDesign PatternsCode Quality

Flipkart's most distinctive round — 90 minutes to build a working, runnable system, followed by a separate 30-minute code review call with a second evaluator who reads your code cold. The code review is a live oral defence: they will ask why you chose a particular class structure, what breaks if a new requirement is added, and whether your exception handling is production-grade. A partially working solution with clean OOP design consistently beats complete-but-spaghetti code. This ordering — machine coding before DSA — is unusual among Indian product companies and signals how seriously Flipkart weights design quality.

Medium

What to expect

  • e.g., 'Design a Parking Lot system' — ParkingLot, ParkingFloor, ParkingSpot, Vehicle hierarchy with a pluggable fee Strategy; evaluator will ask 'add motorbike support without touching ParkingSpot'
  • e.g., 'Build a Splitwise clone' — Group, Expense, Settlement with equal/percentage/exact split modes; expect 'now add a debt-simplification algorithm'
  • e.g., 'Design Snake & Ladder game engine' — Board, Dice, Player, GameEngine with configurable snakes/ladders and pluggable dice strategy
  • Code review trap: evaluator will ask you to extend a core class — candidates who hardcoded business rules inside constructors fail here even if the code ran correctly
  • You must demo a runnable CLI — printing output to stdout counts; no GUI required, but a crash during demo is an immediate flag

Tip: Spend the first 10–15 minutes sketching classes on paper or in comments — Flipkart's code review call rewards candidates who can explain design intent, not just working output. The second evaluator has not seen your problem statement; they read your code cold. Variable names like 'x' and 'temp' will cost you.

Coding Round 1

Round 2 of 4DSA / Coding
60 min
TreesGraphsSliding WindowStringsBFS/DFS

1–2 DSA problems on trees, strings, or arrays. Flipkart SDE-1 interviewers push for optimization — they expect you to start with brute force, get it working, then improve. 'Length of maximum substring without repeating characters' and graph-based equation validation (if a/c=10, can you determine r/a?) are the kind of problems that appear. Write test cases yourself without being asked — it signals production awareness, which Flipkart explicitly evaluates.

Medium

What to expect

  • e.g., 'Length of maximum substring without repeating characters' — sliding window, O(n); be ready to handle Unicode, not just ASCII
  • e.g., 'Division equation validation' — build a weighted graph from known ratios, BFS/DFS to check if a query path exists; many candidates get the graph construction wrong
  • e.g., 'Find distance between two nodes in a Binary Tree' — LCA + depth calculation; follow-up: 'what if it's an N-ary tree?'
  • Failure mode: jumping straight to the optimal solution without explaining the brute force — Flipkart interviewers want to see your thinking, not just the answer
  • Write at least 3 test cases unprompted: null input, single-element, edge boundary — candidates who skip this are flagged even if the code is correct

About Flipkart SDE-1 Interviews

Flipkart SDE-1 interviews open with a 90-minute machine coding round followed by a separate 30-minute code review call — an unusual two-stage format. You write working, demo-able code for problems like parking lot or Splitwise, then defend your design live to a second evaluator. Two DSA rounds follow (trees, graphs, DP), and a hiring manager close. No system design at this level. Progress to the next round does not depend on clearing the previous one — Flipkart evaluates holistically across all rounds.
