Online Assessment
Two medium coding problems on HackerEarth or a similar platform, framed in a retail or logistics context. The OA is straightforward — no exotic algorithms, no trick constraints. What eliminates people here is running out of time by over-engineering the first problem, or failing edge cases that the retail context makes obvious (empty cart, zero inventory, single-store edge).
What to expect
- Problem 1 (Medium): e.g., 'Calculate the final cart total given a list of products, quantities, and tiered discount rules — items above ₹1000 get 20% off, bundles of 3+ get an extra 10%' — simulation with hash map, watch for overlapping discount precedence
- Problem 2 (Medium): e.g., 'Find the maximum number of SKUs a distribution truck can carry given weight and volume constraints per item' — 2D 0/1 knapsack (weight + volume as two constraints), not a simple greedy
- A code-snippet section (MCQs on output prediction and complexity) precedes the coding problems on some tracks — budget 15 minutes for it or you lose coding time
- Edge cases that fail silent submissions: empty cart, all items below discount threshold, single item at exactly the weight limit — these are in every test suite

Technical Round 1
This round at Target India does not always look like a LeetCode session. In 2024-2025 reports, candidates often received existing Java code — a Spring Boot controller handling order management or inventory updates — and were asked to find bugs, add a feature, and write test cases. When it is a fresh problem, the difficulty stays at LeetCode medium. The collaborative culture is real: interviewers give hints. Declining a hint reads as arrogance, not confidence.
What to expect
- Machine coding variant (common at Manyata drives): given a Java service that reads a product CSV and computes inventory turnover, fix a NullPointerException in the batch processor, add a method to filter by category, write a JUnit test for the edge case where the file is empty
- Fresh problem variant: e.g., 'Given a product category tree, find the top-K categories by total sales including all subcategories' — tree DFS with accumulated values fed into a min-heap of size K
- Java-specific follow-ups are routine: how HashMap works internally, difference between Comparable and Comparator for sorting product objects by price vs. rating, when to use ConcurrentHashMap in an inventory cache
- Candidates who solve the problem but cannot discuss their Java collection choices get dinged — Target is a Java shop and they check

About Target SDE-1 Interviews
Target India (Bengaluru) SDE-1 interviews run 4 rounds at Manyata Tech Park: an OA, a DSA technical round, a standalone SQL round, and a hiring manager discussion. Target is a Java shop — Spring Boot and collections come up even for SDE-1. The SQL round is not a warmup; it's a full 60 minutes and has eliminated strong DSA candidates who treated it as an afterthought. Expect LeetCode medium difficulty throughout, but the machine coding style — fix existing code, add a feature, write tests — catches candidates who only practiced blank-slate LeetCode.
