Background check and motivation calibration. Rubrik recruiters check whether you understand what the company does — protecting petabytes of enterprise data across backup, recovery, and ransomware resilience. Engineers who can articulate the domain land better in later rounds.

Easy

What to expect

  • Walk me through your background and what draws you to infrastructure and data reliability work
  • What do you know about Rubrik's product — what problem does backup-as-a-service solve technically?
  • What languages and systems have you worked with — any experience with concurrent programming or OS-level primitives?
  • Logistics: remote/onsite preference, start date, compensation expectations

Algorithm Deep-Dive 1

Round 2 of 4DSA / Coding
60 min
DFSHashMapsCircular BuffersConcurrency BasicsCorrectness-first Thinking

Rubrik calls this an 'Algorithm Deep-Dive' but it lands closer to a system coding problem than a classic LeetCode session. The problem often mixes data structures with OS or concurrency framing. At SDE-1, you get medium-difficulty DSA, but the interviewer immediately probes correctness and edge cases — a clean-but-incomplete solution fails. Coding is done live on CoderPad.

Medium

What to expect

  • e.g., 'Implement a fixed-size FIFO queue from scratch using an array — then make it thread-safe' — circular buffer + mutex + condition variable
  • e.g., 'Web crawler variant: crawl a directory tree and collect all file hashes — what if a symlink creates a cycle?' — DFS + visited set, cycle detection is the explicit trap
  • Interviewer explores ALL edge cases directly: empty queue under concurrent dequeue, null inputs, integer overflow in size calculations for a 64-byte block tracker
  • Must justify time complexity with argument, not assertion — 'I think it's O(n log n)' without explanation is a red flag

About Rubrik SDE-1 Interviews

Rubrik SDE-1 interviews are dominated by system coding — concurrent, thread-safe implementations of schedulers, queues, and resource managers. Rubrik builds backup and data protection infrastructure for 6,000+ enterprises, so correctness under failure and concurrency safety are treated as first-class requirements, not afterthoughts. One weak concurrency answer is enough to get a straight 'no hire'.
