Coding Round 1

Round 1 of 5DSA / Coding
60 min
Segment TreesSkip ListsStack-based AlgorithmsCompetitive Programming Level

Very hard DSA requiring both algorithmic precision and clean engineering. Senior candidates have reported problems on segment trees, skip lists, and courier leaderboard designs — the kind of structures that appear in Coupang's real-time performance dashboards. At this level, the optimal solution is mandatory; the interviewer will explicitly stop you from settling for sub-optimal complexity.

Very Hard

What to expect

  • e.g., 'Design a real-time leaderboard for courier delivery performance that supports top-K query in O(log n) with concurrent updates' — skip list or segment tree; TreeMap works but interviewers will ask for lock-free alternatives
  • e.g., 'Implement Largest Rectangle in Histogram — then extend it to 3D stacking of packages in a warehouse slot' — stack-based O(n), follow-up adds a dimension requiring DP composition
  • Must reach optimal complexity through reasoned discussion, not from pattern memory — 'why not a heap here?' is a real probe
  • Discussion: 'Your leaderboard serves 30K couriers updating simultaneously — what's the latency profile and where does consistency break first?'

Coding Round 2

Round 2 of 5DSA / Coding
60 min
Event SortingInterval MergingStack RecursionMemory-Efficient Algorithms

Hard problem with real-world logistics framing, sometimes presented as a code review of a broken implementation. Senior engineers are expected to connect algorithmic choices to system-level consequences — Coupang's couriers generate 17K GPS events per second, so 'this runs in O(n²)' is not an abstract concern here.

Very Hard

What to expect

  • e.g., 'Given a series of courier GPS coordinates, reconstruct each courier's delivery route and flag anomalies where deviation exceeds a threshold' — interval merging + event sorting; Kalman filter concept as follow-up
  • e.g., 'Implement a Decode String operation that handles nested depth — then add support for base64-encoded segments' — stack-based recursion, follow-up tests whether you can extend cleanly
  • Code review variant: 'Here's a fulfillment batch processor — it has three bugs at scale. Find them.' — candidates who only spot the obvious bug and miss the off-by-one in batch boundary handling don't pass
  • Scale connection: 'Your anomaly detector runs every 100ms — at 50K active couriers, what's the compute cost and how do you reduce it?'

About Coupang Senior SDE Interviews

Coupang Senior SDE interviews have a five-to-six round loop including a dedicated Bar Raiser round modeled on Amazon's process. DSA is still hard — graph optimization and DP problems at competitive-programming level — and system design is grounded in Coupang's own infrastructure: fulfillment orchestration, geo-indexed courier dispatch, and real-time logistics at 2M+ orders per day across South Korea.
