Machine Coding Round

Round 1 of 5LLD / OOD
90 min
OOPSOLIDState MachineRepository PatternStrategy Pattern

More complex machine coding with a 30-minute code review call immediately after. At SDE-2, Flipkart expects a layered architecture — models, services, repository-like patterns — and business logic that goes beyond simple CRUD. Recent 2024 problems include a Commission/Affiliate App with a full order state machine (CREATED → DISPATCHED → DELIVERED → RETURN_PERIOD_EXPIRED, with payment triggering only when pending commission exceeds ₹100), a multi-tier Cache system (L1/L2/L3 with distinct capacities and eviction policies), and a Flight Booking backend with conflict-free seat reservation. Simply wiring up classes isn't enough — the state transitions and edge cases are the evaluation surface.

Medium–Hard

What to expect

  • e.g., 'Design a Commission/Affiliate Management App' — OrderState enum machine, commission calculated at CREATED but paid only at RETURN_PERIOD_EXPIRED once threshold ≥ ₹100; evaluator will ask 'what happens if payment fails midway?'
  • e.g., 'Design a multi-tier Cache system' — L1/L2/L3 with distinct capacity, read/write latency, and eviction strategies (LRU/LFU/FIFO pluggable); implement Get, Set, Stats with cache-miss promotion logic
  • e.g., 'Build a Stock Portfolio Tracker' — User, Stock, Order (BUY/SELL), Portfolio with P&L calculation; admin controls stock prices; evaluator checks: 'can you add short-selling without breaking existing logic?'
  • Repository pattern expected: a flat file with all logic in one class is an automatic red flag at SDE-2, even if it compiles and demos correctly
  • Failure mode: candidates who hardcode state transitions (if status == 'DELIVERED') instead of using a proper State pattern or enum with transition guards fail the extensibility probe

Coding Round 1

Round 2 of 5DSA / Coding
60 min
HeapsMonotonic DequeSliding WindowStack

Medium-Hard DSA — at SDE-2 the expectation is to reach optimal without a brute-force warmup. Flipkart SDE-2 interviewers have confirmed asking 'Longest Valid Parentheses' (stack-based, O(n)), heap-greedy combinations like 'Maximize performance of a team given speed and efficiency arrays', and classic sliding window problems. The interviewer will explicitly probe complexity — stating O(n log n) without explaining why scores lower than deriving it live.

Medium

What to expect

  • e.g., 'Longest Valid Parentheses' — stack-based O(n) approach; follow-up: 'can you do it in O(1) space with two passes?' — many candidates who know the stack solution haven't thought about the two-pointer variant
  • e.g., 'Maximize Performance of a Team' — sort by efficiency descending, max-heap of size k for speeds; heap+greedy pattern that trips candidates who reach for DP first
  • e.g., 'Sliding Window Maximum' — monotonic deque, O(n); interviewer will reframe as 'real-time price monitoring window over a Flipkart catalog feed'
  • Failure mode: starting with a working O(n²) solution and not proactively optimizing — at SDE-2 you're expected to lead the complexity conversation, not wait to be asked
  • Time and space breakdown required before and after any follow-up constraint change — 'it depends' without a number is a yellow flag

About Flipkart SDE-2 Interviews

Flipkart SDE-2 interviews add a system design round and raise the machine coding bar significantly. Problems involve multi-entity state machines (order lifecycle, commission payouts, cache tiers) rather than simple CRUD. System design is grounded in Flipkart's actual scale — flash sale inventory reservation, flight booking with race conditions, chatbot escalation. Expect 5 rounds over 3-4 weeks. The DSA bar jumps to hard — Longest Valid Parentheses, heap + greedy combinations, and sliding window maximums are representative 2024 problems.
